We know there are some that are either new to RP, or are merely curious and want to learn more about it. Regardless of your reasons, you are bound to have some questions.
Some of the more common questions are listed below, but feel free to ask your own!
What is RP?
RP is an acronym that stands for Role Playing. Role-playing refers to the changing of one's behavior to assume a role. In this particular reference, we speak of role-playing to refer to a wide range of games in which a mun (person playing the character) takes on the personification of a character either of their own creation or by canon (adapted from movies, books, games, television, etc.) and portrays themself from the point of view of the character, either in first person perspective or third person perspective.
How do I role play?
While there is no specific right or wrong way to RP, there are commonly accepted methods by the RP community.
Basically, you are putting on a character, a persona, like a role in a movie. You would be the actor, portraying the part of the role. One of the first basics to creating a character is choosing what kind of character you wish to play. Once you have decided that, it is generally advised to create some sort of characteristics for your chosen role. Is your character rich? Poor? A wanderer? A warrior? A healer? Male? Female? How does your character feel about other species and races? What time period is your character from? These questions and more are things to consider when creating the perfect character for you.
Can I have more than one character?
Of course! Many rpers often have multiple characters, and indeed, multiple accounts on IMVU for their characters. It all depends on how well you can keep up with how many. There are some who have multiple characters on one account, so you never know who the person is playing until they write their entrance post. There are even some who roleplay multiple characters at once, though again, this is up to your own disgression and comfort zone whether or not you wish to attempt the same.
Do I always have to stay in character?
Of course not. There is IC (In Character) and OOC (Out Of Character) ways of chatting. Generally, OOC chat is separated from IC chat by ((parentheses)) or [[brackets]].
In many public rooms or even in private chat, there are those who would prefer OOC to be kept to a minimum or taken to a different chat. Its up to the discretion of the one you are RPing with, as well as yourself. If you are in a public room, check the guidelines suggested by the room owner or the moderators.
If I have an issue with another person, is it considered an in or out of character issue?
It all depends. Is the issue between your character and theirs? This would be an In Character issue, and should remain there. There are people who play villains and antagonists throughout the RP world. Just because their character feels or behaves a certain way doesn't mean that the person behind the character does. Often times, the person playing the character that hates you has absolutely no problem with you, and is merely sticking to character.
Is the issue between you and the other player? This is an Out Of Character issue, and should be taken into a private chat if you are in a public place with other RPers present, so as not to interrupt their RP. It may be a mis-communication, and something easily enough resolved.
Is role play open to anyone?
Absolutely. If you have a character within your imagination, or were inspired by something you read or watched, then you have a basis to begin considering a character of your own. Many RPers are writers, and take considerable pride and extreme attention to detail. Still, for the new person to RP, this can be confusing and even intimidating. Dont let it scare you off... many RPers have been at this for years and have well thought out and long-term played storylines. Find a nitch that is right for you and explore the possibilities.
Are there certain things that I can or cannot use in roleplay?
That all depends on where you are roleplaying, what you are roleplaying, and with whom. Different rooms have different rules and different players have different preferences. Again, see this link (Insert link here to Suggested Guidelines and RP Etiquette thread) for many different do's and dont's in roleplay.
You may have more questions to pose to the RP community, and we welcome them! Feel free to ask what you need to know. I know one of us will be glad to answer you to the best of our ability.
